What is social rest?

The act of social rest does not mean taking time alone. In fact, it means the opposite. We are designed and destined for good social interaction. Have you ever found yourself after having a stressful day meeting up with a good friend for dinner or chatting on the phone, and just feeling so uplifted afterwards? That is an example of positive social rest. 

Social rest is about creating relationships and taking time for those who nourish and inspire you. These are the people who leave you feeling fuller after interacting with them. In our opinion, the world needs more of these kinds of people!

 

Social rest also means...

Social rest also means having clarity on the types of relationships you desire. Then, once you do, differentiate between those relationships that revive us from those that exhaust us. Toxic relationships are not welcomed here! Spending less time with any one person or group who leaves you feeling exhausted or depleted is totally okay. 

 

How to get social rest.

If the busy lifestyles we all live weren't enough, now we have a pandemic to recover from. At this point it may seem as though getting social rest is a far reach. It doesn't have to be though, and it's important to implement into our lives. Here are a few simple things you can do:

  • Surround yourself with positive and supportive people.
  • Resist the urge to text. Call a close friend or family member to chat! Try to have a conversation about good or meaningful things, and refrain from complaining. 
  • Go for a walk or grab a coffee with a friend. Take turns talking and listening while enjoying the present moment. 
  • Check in with your spouse or partner regularly in regards to feelings and emotions. Even if only for 15 minutes. Try to do so without including any responsibilities or to-do list items. 
  • Plan a double date with another couple. 
  • Take a break from socializing with those who tend to wear you out. 
  • Cut ties with any toxic relationships. 

 

Final thoughts

If you find yourself disconnected or disengaged with friends and family, don't worry. We've all been there. Plus, it's totally okay to take some time to ourselves. Just remember that finding social rest and applying it to our health and wellness journey is just as important. Thanks for reading!
