Why Choose Soy Wax Candles vs. Paraffin?

Why chose soy wax candles blog post

We know this probably isn't the first time you've heard about soy wax.
Maybe you have your favorite soy wax candle burning as we speak. But what is it? And why are more and more people turning towards this type of candle?

Our 100% natural soy wax candles are available in a variety of enticing scents. When creating our candles, we discovered that soy wax was a far better option than traditional paraffin for many reasons. Find out why below!

Soy Candles Are Non-Toxic

Derived from the soybean, soy wax is a 100% raw hydrogenated vegetable oil that turns to a solid at room temperature. This wax is completely natural, holds fragrance, and does not contain any harmful toxins that could be released into the air. Paraffin wax, on the other hand, is a byproduct of crude oil that produces harmful by-products when burned or melted.

Candles made of paraffin also contain hidden dangers in the form of additives that are combined with the wax in order to make the resulting candles look, smell, and burn better. These additives, called microcrystallines, help improve the texture of wax while polyethylenes produced from natural gas add a glossy finish.

Strong smelling, glossy candles may sound convincing... but breathing these toxins in over time can increase the risk of developing chronic conditions such as common allergies, asthma, and even certain types of cancer. The good news for candles lovers? There are much healthier and eco friendly candle options such as beeswax or OTD's preferred wax, soy!

Soy Candles Burn Cleaner

While all candles will emit some black soot while burning, soy wax burns cleaner by releasing less soot than paraffin. It's also a great carrier for fragrance, so you won't see any chemical amplifiers to enhance the scent throw here!

Soy Candles Last Longer

Typically soy wax candles will burn for 30-50% longer than a paraffin alternative. This is because they have a much lower melting point. They also create a larger melt pool and release more of the fragrance into the air for longer.

Soy Wax Is Easier To Clean

Accidents happen. With soy wax candles you won't need to worry as much about splashes or spills. Spilt soy wax can easily be cleaned up with a little soap and hot water.

Soy Wax is Environmentally Friendly

Soybeans are a renewable source, making soy wax candles an environmentally friendly option. This can be especially important for those who have kids in the house or are pregnant, as health-wise it's the safest option! So, not only do these eco friendly candles benefit the household, they benefit the world, too!

Stearic Acid

Stearic acid is a safe, fatty acid that occurs naturally in plant and animal fats. We take a small amount of 100% natural stearic acid derived from vegetable fat, and add it to our candle mixtures along with clean fragrance oil. Why do we add this ingredient? Actually, this component is often used in candle making! After researching and testing different candle techniques, we found that stearic acid not only improved the appearance of our candles, but increased the burn time and retained stronger fragrance throws, as well!

Black Obsidian

Black obsidian is a strong protection stone that helps with grounding, and shields against any negative energies. This stone can also draw out mental stress and tension while stimulating growth on all levels.
