The Meaning Behind Mindfulness

Nowadays, it's the phrase we're all beginning to see and hear more and more of; be mindful.

But what does that even mean? And why is it so important? Google the term, and you'll find:

"a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique."

Sounds easy, right? Keep in mind that mindfulness isn't something that necessarily comes natural to us. Most of us spend the majority of our lives on auto pilot, going through the motions of our daily norms and activities. Sometimes our minds are also filled with thoughts and overthinking about rehashing the past or imagining the future.

Being mindful has many meanings. Simply put, if we can return our thoughts to the present moment... if we can practice being aware of our thoughts, feelings, body sensations, and surroundings... if we can accept those thoughts and feelings without judging them or believing theres a right/wrong way to think... then we can know what it means to be mindful.

So, how can we practice mindfulness? Try these different techniques below to find what works best for you.
  • Meditation
  • Exercise
  • Breathing practices
  • Journaling
  • Practice listening wholeheartedly
  • Practice Gratitude
  • Do more of the things you love
