Whether at risk of a serious cognitive issue or not, brain health matters for everyone. It is important for individual, no matter the age, to indulge in exercises and activities that boost brain activity and health.

When it comes to brain health, your dietary choices can have a big impact. Our minds function best when they get the right nutrients.

Thinking of your brain as an organ that, just like your kidney or liver, is a good practice. It means you would need to eat well and make the right lifestyle choices to make the organ function at its best.

Studies show that eating high-quality meals that contain antioxidants, vitamins, fatty acids, and minerals nourish your brain and protect it from oxidative stress – a factor that saves our brain cells from getting damaged.

 

Getting Good Quality Sleep

Sleep is often overlooked for its benefits, especially in younger individuals. 60% of Americans report that their sleep needs remain unfulfilled during a typical work week.

In addition, factors such as chronic illnesses and psychological distress also play a huge role in poor sleep.

Sleep can take a considerable toll on our brains. Not only does it hinder learning and academic performance but it also impairs cognitive performance in individuals. A good night of sleep is essential to proper cognitive function, especially in the short term.

Moving further on, studies also suggest that sleep and memory are strongly correlated and can lead to a decline in neuropathway activity and other cognitive diseases.

Aim to sleep at least 7-9 hours per day. Some people may need more or less, according to their own needs. In the end, it is important to aim for a sleeping pattern that helps you wake up fresh and rejuvenated.

Exercise Your Mind by Indulging in Brain-Healthy Activities

A good practice to follow for better brain health is to indulge in activities that exercise the brain. This includes crossword puzzles, word games, and other challenging mental activities that force you to think and use your analytical skills.

There are numerous apps nowadays that offer stimulative games. In addition to online games, you can always play a nice board game, such as Scrabble, with your friends. Doing this would provide you with some healthy social bonding time with your friends and family, helping lift your mood, while you make some brain gains.

It is important to remember that these activities may not show immediate results. However, the effort you make in exercising your brain adds up and makes a significant difference in the quality of your life in the long run.
